Do Vaginal Dilators Really Work?

There are many reasons why your doctor’s office may send you to the adult store for vaginal dilators. When I am training new employees, I always cover those reasons FIRST.

It is so important to understand that sexual pleasure and medical reasons can, and more often than not, go hand-in-hand..

Do Vaginal Dilators Really Work?

Recently I have had more women call asking if we sell vaginal dilators. The answer is YES. I do my best to be as empathetic as possible, and understanding. I want customers to know I am listening, and that I hear them, but most importantly I do not want them to feel ashamed.

There are many reasons why your doctor’s office may send you to the adult store for vaginal dilators. When I am training new employees, I always cover those reasons FIRST. It is so important to understand that sexual pleasure and medical reasons can, and more often than not, go hand-in-hand..

The reasons vaginal dilators are needed vary tremendously. You may need one due to certain types of cancer, or cancer treatments, menopause, vaginismus, vaginal atrophy, post radiation, adhesions, etc. The list goes on, but the vagina can lose some of its elasticity, and need to be retrained for more comfortable penetrative sex; or even just a more pleasant pelvic exam.

Vaginal dilators DO work

If someone has been living in discomfort for a long period of time, vaginal dilators are a great way to take back some of the power, and rebuild your sexual confidence. Having less pain is always a good thing, and is our goal at LoveWorks; make sure our customers choose the right products.

I am no doctor but I can provide information on different types of vaginal dilators.  Other more specific information such as how long to use the dilator, or whether it really will help you, is a question that you must discuss with your doctor.  But I do have some information I can share with you, and products I can recommend.

Vaginal dilators fall into the category of Kegel exercisers. To most people, it sounds counter-productive, but once the dilators are inserted, you will need to squeeze your vaginal muscles (the kegels), to help your body adjust and relax.

Vibrating and Non-Vibrating

We sell two dilator kits in store. One is the Sinclair Select Dilator Set, and the other is the Dr. Laura Berman Dilator Set. Both are a bit different.

The Sinclair Select Dilator set is made with a medical grade, body safe silicone material. This material is smooth, tapered a bit, and will have some give to it for more comfortable insertion.

You must NOT use a silicone lube with this product; instead use a water-based lube, which will work just fine. Sinclair is a complete set of 5 different sizes varying from 2.8 inches long x 0.5 inches wide to 5.5 inches long x 1.25 inches wide.

The Dr Laura Berman Dilator Set is a vibrating set made from ABS plastic, (the hard plastic). There are 4 different sizes varying from 3.5 inches long x .75 inches wide to 6.5 inches long x 1.5 inches wide.

It also comes with a textured sleeve made from TPR for more comfort and pleasure if the plastic is too hard for you.

This set also works a little differently in the sense that you attach each size onto a handle. The handle makes it easier to control the insertion, and also provides the vibration.

Which dilator set you choose is completely up to you. I will say we sell far more of the silicone (non-vibrating) set, than the ABS vibrating one.

There should be no pain.

To insert the dilator, comfortably lie on your back. Your knees should be bent, and legs spread about a shoulder length apart. Be relaxed. If you are having difficulty relaxing, take a warm bath prior.

Start with the smallest dilator, add lube to it and yourself, and insert into the vagina slowly, and gently. You should feel a slight pressure, but you should not feel pain. If you feel pain, stop, and see about finding something smaller. If you do not feel any pressure at all, go ahead and size up.

Leave inserted for whatever amount of time had been discussed with your healthcare provider.

Your doctor will help you choose an exercise routine

The amount of time suggested is usually less than 30 minutes per size at least once per day.  What most women find, is that the insertion is the most difficult – but when the dilator is in place, it becomes much easier to relax and allow the dilator to stay in place.

As you relax, squeeze your muscles to allow them to work with the inserted dilator.

Like I said before, I am no Doctor, so you always want to verify this information with your healthcare provider. But I am 100% here to help you find what works for you, and to help make it a more pleasant shopping experience than you may have originally imagined.

We have spent the last 28 years helping people with their most intimate issues and concerns.  Give me a chance to help you and make you feel comfortable as well.
